National Chaplaincy Program - Applications Data for Round 1 2007

The Minister for Education, Science and Training, the Hon Julie Bishop MP, today announced an overwhelming response to the first round of funding under the National School Chaplaincy Programme , with 1503 applications received, representing 15% of all Australian schools.

“This is an important programme assisting schools in providing greater pastoral care and supporting students’ spiritual wellbeing,” Minister Bishop said.

“I am pleased to see such a strong interest in this Programme from schools across the country.

“The Australian Government has invested $90 million over three years to make these vital services available to schools.

“The assessment of applications is proceeding and I expect to announce the results of the first round of funding next month.”

Applications are assessed against the following criteria: community consultation; school community need for chaplaincy services; value for money; and cash/in-kind support.

“In order to provide reasonable access to funding in the second round, I have allocated 60% of the available funding for the first round,” Minister Bishop said.

“Applications will be competitively assessed and the Government will hold a second funding round later this year.

“Schools will have another opportunity to apply for funding later this year. All unsuccessful applications from the first round will be automatically considered in the second round.”
